Start of Painting
The Falls
16x20"
Acrylic on canvas
This is the second step. First I quickly roughed in the design using
warm, more intense color with lots of medium and a brush. Then, once dry, I
used black gesso, red, yellow, blue and white with lots of medium and a
painting knife.
It has a raw power which I hope to preserve. The paint is doing the talking.
After more work...

Still all painting knife. I did glaze the falls with a brush most
of which is now covered up.
Black is in almost every mixture.

Question from Reader
Dear Robert - My daughter and I each bought a copy of your book,
Real Art, Real Easy, in Bonners Ferry. WOW!!
Answer
Short answer...Brushes.
That was a year ago. Brushes is the App used by
Jorge Colombo for the cover of The New Yorker, June 1, 2009.
I've used it myself. It's intuitive and easy and just won an award.
Still the best it seems or one of the best.
Sketchbook is also a good one.

"Brushes is a painting application designed from scratch for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Featuring an advanced color picker, several realistic brushes, multiple layers, extreme zooming, and a simple yet deep interface, it is a powerful tool for creating original artwork on your mobile device."
Check out
iDraw for the iPad"($9) - iDraw is a new vector-illustration and drawing utility for the iPad. It allows users to create both simple and complex designs and provides a variety of brush and pencil tools, as well as a support for multiple layering effects. Support is also offered for exporting drawings as vector-based PDFs, or exporting them to the iPad’s
photo library. [Download - 3.3MB]"David Hockney on the iPad
"As it empowers more and more people to distribute their own images, it weakens the older suppliers of images and perhaps governments as well," he said.
Hockney said his iPhone work may be very 21st century, but it still requires an ancient method of display -- mounted on a wall in a gallery -- for admirers to get the full effect.
"Last year I made 300 drawings on an iPhone. You can only see them one at a time (on an iPhone), so I am having an old-fashioned exhibition. You can compare drawings and keep groups together."
Despite his enthusiasm for his new iPad, Hockney said he could not give up painting.
"I see the iPad as a wonderful new drawing medium, but I am at a loss as to how to make it pay." from Reuters.
Consider the Pogo...
Hope that helps!

POAC Show Entry...New Photos

Quote of the Day
"There’s no denying that I have more information readily at hand when I have a live model. Even when I have had a model, however, what I have to do in the end is to
consciously abandon the model and go for what feels right. Otherwise, it becomes an exercise in duplicating something. Sometimes what feels right is not what actually is right. With Big Man, his feet were too large for his body. I ended up distorting the work in order to enhance the feeling of the piece rather than to make it look precisely like a particular person."SPECIAL!

Many years ago there was a train wreck here in north Idaho.
Stacks of paper were found on the ground. Locals were
allowed to gather it up. I was given a number of
these sheets. This is the first time I've
used it. I coated both side with
gesso. It's a very rough paper
and heavy weight.

New Painting

Intended to be submitted to the
CM Russell miniature show, CMR Museum
Great Falls, Montana.
I start by composing on the computer,
outlining the shapes and then printing at the proper scale.
It will be 8x16", acrylic on canvas.

I use homemade Sanguine 'tracing paper' to transfer the line drawing
to the canvas with an embossing tool. I go over the lines with
acrylic medium. Usually I would reinforce the lines with
waterproof ink. This time I try skipping that step.
I try rubbing the Sanguine onto
the gesso and smearing it around with medium.
the effect is not that great, but worth a try.

I mix yellow ochre with acrylic medium and apply
a glaze with a paper towel. The traced lines are becoming
too faint to see easily.

I apply color to every area of the canvas.

I apply a glaze with Rose Madder Hue and medium
to unify the picture and shift the mood.

I rework the entire painting...

...until last night it seemed finished. I signed it.

Later I realized more adjustments were needed.
This morning I change the color of the left bandana,
make the distant mountain a darker color,
lighten the top of the rocks a bit, and
make the shadows on the girl's sheet
a blue-gray. Now it's done and
submitted to the show.
