On Location Yesterday

Deep Creek Poplars
9x12"
Oil on canvas
$650

Found a shady spot along the Westside Road. I did paint out some this winter. I much prefer warm weather really. Now it's finally here! Down side...green is every where...what to do? Here's my latest attempt. Not original, of course, I used yellow ochre, lemon, black, white and bt. sienna. Partial underpainting with vermillion. No blue. Artisan and Duo oils,

Head Study

First Recital, Head Study
8x6"
Oil on canvas

I used Artisan water mixable oils for this, red and black, in a oil wash method. In spots the canvas was staining and could not be wiped back to white on the skin areas. I began using white paint at that point. It was pre-gessoed canvas. Maybe a coat of gesso would be a good idea for next time.

Huckleberry Picker...Steps Animated

Transferred the drawing to a 12x12" canvas.
Outlined the main shapes with black and put in the darkest areas.
All acrylic so far.

The colors washed in and kept gray at this point.

The animated step by step demo...

It takes a special program to make 'animated GIFs'.
I found a good one for free!

New Painting

Champs Elysees, The Arc
9x12
Acrylic on canvas

This is my first contribution to 'virtualpaintout'. The idea is each month a new city is chosen. Using Google Street View you poke around looking for something to paint. May is Paris. I spent so much time cruising the city it feels like I've been there!

First Look at New Painting

Seven Sisters
16x20"
Acrylic on Canvas

Beautiful color is what I had in mind for this. Old Holland Pthalo Blue, Aliz. Crim., Indian Yel. light, black and white. the first two are very strong while the yellow is very weak. I mixed a lot of gel medium into the strong ones which made them more manageable. I'm still working on this adjusting colors and values trying to perfect it, hoping not to ruin it.

How to draw with Charcoal...

Some are wondering how to get started drawing with charcoal and how I made the drawing below. I'm just learning these new techniques myself from Ray Balkwill's book 'Painting Landscapes with Atmosphere'. Minimal equipment needed:

4B pencil; felt-tip markers, fine and broad; Vine Charcoal, fat and thin;
Chamois; Stumps; Conte, black and white; Erasers, Extra Soft and kneaded;
Paper Towel. Not shown: sketch book, fingers and can of hair spray for fixative.

Sketch in the composition with the pencil leaving a border all around. Confirm the drawing with the fine felt tip darkening only essential key points you don't want to loose because all the pencil lines are going to disappear. With the broad felt tip fill in the darkest shapes. Rub the large vine charcoal over all the white area remaining. Gently smooth the charcoal with the Chamois to make a uniform middle gray. With the extra soft eraser remove charcoal in light areas. The kneaded eraser will bring back the white paper in the very lightest areas. The paper towel is for removing charcoal, blending, making marks and wiping fingers. The stumps are good for blending small areas. Then it's a matter of adding and removing charcoal, working back and forth until you're happy with the effect. I use the white Conte at the end for white lines and spots or even to make a black area white if needed. It's a very flexible, fluid and forgiving way to draw that is very much like painting...and it's fun!

 It's a great book...
