Thursday, October 23, 2008 Riverfront Park We caught the matinee performance of 'Phantom of the Opera'. Very good.
Still had daylight so we grabbed our sketching stuff and headed for the river
and a little plein air drawing. Sepia pen on paper. Lots of kids around. A few
looked and allowed as we are both really good.

Pencil Sketch I've been reading about Bill Turner (JMW Turner). Looks like he tried painting out with oils a few times, but didn't care for it much. He preferred to do a drawing on watercolor paper on location, then add color back in the studio from memory. Or do a pencil sketch and an oil painting from that. Anyway he relied on his memory. With that in mind I did a pencil sketch of this scene from memory...no peeking at the painting or photos. Interesting how the memory works to edit and correct the design when given the chance.

Monday, October 13, 2008 Scotchman's Peak Wilderness Area
Last Friday artist showed their work at Timber Stand Gallery in Sandpoint. Saturday 2 to 7 pm the show moved to Outskirts Gallery in Hope. I didn't paint on the 10th. We had good weather, on the cold side and windy at times.

Towncar Clay Bank Pareidolia
Pareidolia...describes a psychological
phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound)
being perceived as significant. Common examples include images of animals or
faces in clouds, the man in the moon, and hidden messages on records played in
reverse. The word comes from the Greek para- —"beside", "with" or
"alongside"—and eidolon—"image" (the diminutive of eidos—"image", "form",
"shape"). Pareidolia is a type of apophenia. See any faces and animals? I do.

Moonlit Lake I've been doing paintings of Roman Nose Lake for many years. This may be the best yet. Close to being done. Only paint and medium on this one again as I learned to do from the John Hammond DVD. No water mixed with the paint as normal.
