I've covered over some of the intense blue. Too much red now. I fixed it in the one above.

ISAP Newsletter for June...

As you may know I'm the newsletter guy for the International Society of Acrylic Painters. We've made the switch from print to online and the result is bigger and better. Of course I'm biased...see for yourself! June '08 Newsletter. My review of the new Golden OPEN Acrylics starts on page 12!

The newsletter looks wonderful & I want to thank you all –particularly Robert Bissett– very much for publishing my interview & news.  Also, Robert’s review on the Open Acrylics is very interesting!  And I’ll be checking out all the videos suggested in the newsletter as well.  I like that there are clickable links inside the newsletter, that’s very convenient. I know how much effort it takes to run an organized group, so kudos to all of you.  You do a magnificent job!  I’m ever so happy I joined ISAP way back when!  Thank you all for your very hard work!   L.K.

Great newsletter. I can really appreciate the amount of work you put into it. Thank you  P.R.

Bob, you have done a beautiful, informational  letter. Congratulations! I  like your color composition for the headers to the pages and your use of color and page composition was great throughout. You filled the letter with a lot of very good, useful information. Your evaluation of the Open Acrylics by Golden was very well done. Your interview of Lorena Kloosterboer was just wonderful as well.  Keep up the good work. E.P.

This is a WORLD CLASS Newsletter~!!!!   CONGRATS....  Robert you rock!!!   V.P.

Alaska...

Fritz
Acrylic on panel

An old painting from my days in Alaska, late seventies. I was invited to go on a caribou hunting trip in the fall. My shooting was done with a camera. Cold, wet, tired and dirty. It was great!

Day at the beach

More like forty-five minutes at the beach between dropping paintings off for one show and the opening of the couple dozen shows of artwalk. First hot day of the year at 84*, nice.

This morning's effort. A near perfect day for plein air. 65 degrees, no wind, no rain, sunny, birds singing, nothing crawled up my pant leg.

This afternoon's effort. Last week we discovered great new locations along the dike road north side of the river. This was from an abandoned trailer court.

The sun is out finally! But the wind continues to blow making it a challenge. If it was easy everybody'd be doing it. I've switched to Permanent Red Medium, a slightly blue red. Mixed with Ultramarine Blue, a slightly red blue, it makes great violets, purples, mauves and this hot pink.

Plein Air Panel Holder

Yesterday the alert blog reader may have noticed a new panel holder on my easel. I made it in the morning without knowing how it would look at the end. Especially wasn't sure how to make the connection from the tripod head to the holder. I'm surprised how light, rigid and functional it turned out!

Holds up to 18" high canvas/panel. The stove bolt above requires a Philips screwdriver which I always have on my Swiss Army Knife. It screws into the insert nut seen below. Note the beveled sides on the 1/4" plywood. That's the part the tripod head grabs on to.

River Bend

12x9", oil on canvas. Managed to pack up before the rain started. This is along the Kootenai River just west of town near the treatment plant. I was on a quiet little beach as you'll see below.

The scene.

My new Sportsjack. You half sit, half lean. Saves your legs.
The plan is to put a spike on the end so it will
hold itself up.

This was off to the right about fifty yards. There's a large
bird in the nest whose head has not yet turned white.

Called for Rain...

9x12", Oil on panel.

Wind and rain for days. Only wind today and some sun. I set up next to the house which blocked the wind pretty well. Forty-five minutes and it was beginning to rain. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

Maine Harbor...WIP

Maine Harbor (wip)
48x36"
Acrylic on canvas

Of course WIP means work in progress. Started working on this again a week or two ago and have made some good progress. The Maine coast is very exciting for artists. Everywhere you turn...almost ready made pictures. I've established a high horizon. The nearly empty foreground contrasts with the interesting background making it seem, by comparison, even more interesting. A compositional tip - all four corners should be different.

Pen & Ink Sketch

Lilac Sketch

While the local quartet called Dolce was rehearsing in the next room...

Old Boat, Bonner Lake

Yesterday at Bonner Lake this old thing sat slowly composting. I cropped the photo, used the threshold feature and replaced black with gray-purple.

Bonner Lake Plein Air

Arrived about eight. Applied a violet/purple/yellow/white-ish wash to set the color mood and value key.
Some have wondered how I end up with this when the actual scene is mostly green. The secret is the initial thinner wash. It was mostly violet and on the light side. Some purple gray and some yellowish. Without regard to the scene just scrub it on with an old brush looking for color harmony. Then start painting. Mix colors that harmonize with the wash in. If the values are right the color doesn't matter as much. Leave some of the wash showing in the end.

This redwing put on a show all morning flying to and fro. Must have been near his nest.

This stool works pretty well. I used to paint standing up and would prefer that. It was always exhausting. Now I just plain can't do it. The back won't allow more than a half hour or so without complaining. Yesterday I ordered something called a Sportsjack. It looks like a padded bicycle seat on one leg. Your half sit on it, half lean into it. Not quite standing but close. Will review it here next week if it arrives soon.

Restaurant Still Life

Pen and ink from my sketchbook, ~6x9". While waiting for our order, Huevos Rancheros which we split, Loi and I did a little sketching from life. Ink keeps you moving forward since you can't erase. You can still make corrections...see the creamer bowl. The light fixture had several bulbs which created four or five shadows. Sketching trains your eye and hand and increases your powers of observation.

Stopped by to see Dalas' new painting. Did a sketch of Joanie's basket planter on the kitchen table. About 6x9".

Painting Advice...

From a visitor to my website:

I'm still learning a lot of things in painting like my values and such. I work with a limited pallet. I mostly paint oceans but do a lot of plein air paintings also.

I was reading your page and came across how you were using your color wheel .... that really put some info for me... I think this will really help me with my paintings .. today I sat by the lake and painted the water and shadows in the water with the tulles and trees... I started with the brush first blocking in the darks but then I got disgusted with the brush and wiped out with the knife. I painted for 3 hrs and still not done to my satisfaction. So what do you think I should do now .... any suggestions?

Thanks,  Theresa

Hi Theresa,

My advice: take what you have learned and try again. That is what every artist does to improve whatever level he or she may be at.

When I'm disgusted with a picture, which happens a lot, smearing with a painting knife or a rag can mean a new start. You might maintain your major shapes blurring them together a little here and a lot there as seems appropriate. Or you could give it an overall blurring that retains very little of the original. Or you can scrap off all the paint leaving just a ghost image which often is better than what you tried to paint. In any case, this will give you a new beginning and maybe some new ideas.

I've looked at some of your paintings on wetcanvas. My first impression is your photos could be much better. Try stepping outside and taking your photos in open shade. If using direct sun set the painting so the sunlight strikes at an extreme raking angle to reduce the power of the rays and avoid glare. Second...not messy enough. Paint is messy, so let the paint be paint. Let the paint suggest things rather than try to paint with complete control. I see a lot of hard edges that you don't really want. Reserve the hard edges for your focal point.

Hope that helps. Keep painting and try something new everyday. It's supposed to be fun!

Bob
