Latest Plein Air Paintings

Wild Roses
9 x 12", Oil on panel

Tired of fighting the acrylics...they dry almost instantly on the palette in this heat!!!  Our backyard rose bush is awesome this year.

Switching to oils for now.  This one is 9 x 12 on hardboard.  The mountain is two colors, a gray green and a slightly bluer and lighter color.  Then went back and wiped out the lighter spots with the brush.  Ultramarine blue, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red and white.  Have to admit oils are very nice to work with...like butter, thick with a lot of substance.  Lots of time to blend and wipe out.  Acrylics have a plastic feel.

Tulips
12x16", acrylic/canvas

Having dissed acrylics you can do some nice things with them.  On a cooler day a couple weeks ago I started with a magenta toned canvas for spring beauties.

See more new paintnigs.

Paint-Out Great Success!

The First Annual Sandpoint Plein Air Paint-Out
was held June 15 and 16.  About two dozen artist took part.  They came from all over the northwest and as far as Wyoming.  The level of work was very good.  These are people who love to paint, especially out doors, and are good at it.  Probably the biggest names were Betty Billups, Gregg Caudell, Robert Kercher, Carol Swinney and Mike Wise, in alphabetical order.  Carol has an article in the current Art of the West magazine.  Betty has an instructional  book out.

Loi at the lake on the second day after being up all night taking Emily to the airport on her way to China for six months of study!

Boats
12 x 9", acrylic on canvas

Did this the second day.  It poured on the 15th.

Some people managed to do four paintings a day.  I've been struggling with allergies the past couple months which leaves you with very little energy and hard to focus.  I was lucky to do three total!

Sam Owen Day Use
12 x 16", acrylic on canvas

A gray, rainy day...dismal.   We painted under a borrowed canopy.  Stayed dry, but it was dark under there...a little hard to see what you were doing.

At 5 pm on the 16th, Jim Quinn had covered the walls at Timber Stand Gallery with about 150 new plein air pictures.  We had a good crowd with lots of sales.  My painting that won the poster contest earlier this year was sold in a silent auction.

Birches at Twilight
18 x 24" acrylic on canvas

All the artist had a wonderful time.  It's rare when we can gather in large numbers.  Art is normally a solitary activity.  The public was invited to watch the artist in action.  Far as I know no one actually did that.  Maybe next year the word will get out and the weather will cooperate.
