Artisan Northwest
The magazine of Northwest art and artists

The interview happened the afternoon of the16th.  Barb Coyner drove up from the Potlatch area.   She has been interviewing artists professionally for twenty years and also writes for Art of the West magazine.  Barb has written about many notables, including George Carlson also of Idaho.  She was easy to talk with and able to ask insightful questions.  We covered everything from childhood art work to my current innermost ideas about art.  Must wait and see what actually gets in the 900 word article.

Anyone interested in getting on the mailing list for a complimentary copy please let me know asap.

Should see the article in the spring '06 issue.  This is a high end arts magazine.

Upcoming Trip to
ITALY!

At some point every artist must travel to Italy.
Museums, scenic views, canals, hill towns, the sea,
Fishing boats, snowcapped mountains, lakes,
Markets, the architecture, the light...

The first week of April we will be with a group as we tour Rome, Florence, Cremona, and Venice.  The second week we will spend in Tuscany exploring the hill towns and the coast on our own.  Hope to return with many new paintings, sketches and a ton of digital photos.

FEATURED PAINTING 1

Randy in the Studio
16x12" a/c

Randy was home on leave to see Emily on break from Dartmouth, so we saw a lot of Randy.  One day he stopped by on his way to do some recruiting and I was struck by the graphic possibilities of his uniform.  He was willing to pose and here's the result.

Featured Painting 2

Twilight with Birches
18x24", a/c
$1450

A late fall scene in Paradise Valley just a few miles from the house.  This began as a monochromatic under painting with a two inch house brush in Burnt Sienna to establish the major areas of value...no details, just accurate values.  Then, starting with the darkest area the correct color was mixed in a value to match that of the under painting.  Then the second darkest area and so on, but stopping short of the lightest lights and leaving some of the Burnt Sienna showing.  Still no detail allowed.  When all the colors are working in relation to one another and the shapes are looking pretty good, then the lightest areas are finished.  If this is successful the painting needs very little detail.

FEATURED DVD

Capturing the Seasons in Oils
with Tim Deibler

"Its like having a workshop in your own home as you watch Tim demonstrate four different ways you can approach landscape painting. With lively brushwork and easy to follow instruction, you will be inspired to paint the landscape as never before."  Tim Deibler

A must have for anyone interested in learning to paint, or freeing up brushwork,  working faster and more efficiently, in the studio or on location.  Very well done.  Not only a good painter, but a great instructor.  Tim has a method that works.  He studied with Scott Christensen and has been an assistant teacher in Scott's workshop.  I was amazed to see him bring four paintings to near finished in one day.  Then he finished them the next day!

He works from photos which are shown periodically so you can see how he has edited, simplified and improvised.  Part of his secret is the limited palette...fewer colors equals fewer choices to make.  Pthalo Blue, Cad. Yellow, Cad. Orange, Cad. Red, Ultramarine Blue and white, plus Liquin and a number 9 bristle for much of it.  He goes for the big shapes of color and value first, capturing the effects of the light and atmosphere early on.  When he has filled the canvas and it is starting to work, he sets it aside for a day or two to dry.  Then he will fine tune the values, colors and shapes.  Tim uses oils, but you could do almost the same with acrylics.  Highly recommend.  Deibler is pronounced, Deye'.bler.

Movie Review

Memoirs of a Geisha

Two thumbs way up.  This is a visually stunning film with a gripping, bitter-sweet story to tell:  coming of age and true love, plus revenge, rivalry and war.  The world of the geisha is not what you think.  Staring Ziyi Zhang and Ken Watanabe, the entire cast is wonderful.  A little disjointed in places, an artifact of the conversion from book to screen, you will like this one.  Makes me want to read the book and buy the DVD.
